With its delightful, light, and airy look, the Chocolate Scented Daisy, affectionately known as the Chocolate Flower, makes a stunning choice for an informal border garden. Planting it in groups truly showcases its beauty and enchanting fragrance.
Though this charming flower hails from the Southwest, it’s quite adaptable and can thrive in various conditions. Interestingly, it blooms at night, filling the morning air with its irresistible cocoa scent! As the day warms up, the petals gently close or even fall, and the lovely fragrance fades a bit.
What you’ll see left are vibrant green bracts that embrace the flower's center, giving it the delightful appearance of a daisy with a green eye—hence the nickname Green Eyes for the Berlandiera plant. Texas and Florida each boast their unique species, known as Texas and Florida Green Eyes, respectively.
As the bracts dry, they spread out beautifully, creating a lovely hollow space that cradles the large, milk chocolate-colored seeds, ready to ripen. If you allow them to stay undisturbed, these seeds will eagerly sprout come the next spring.
For a lovely touch in your autumn floral arrangements, remember to harvest the brown heads before the seeds detach, keeping an eye on those cream-colored attachment points around the middle.
